The Lifetime-Cost Test for St. Louis Water Treatment Bids

A useful comparison follows each proposed system from the water problem through installation, maintenance, warranty coverage and eventual replacement.

Large water systems and household treatment equipment operate at very different scales, but both require choices among competing purposes. In a Sept. 16, 2026, report about Glen Canyon Dam, Brett Walton of Circle of Blue describes the Trump administration prioritizing hydropower while scientifically determined thresholds had been met for releases benefiting Grand Canyon ecology and recreation.

That Colorado River decision does not describe St. Louis drinking water, and it is not a reason to purchase household equipment. It does illustrate a useful principle: Water systems have specific jobs, and favoring one job can affect another. Homeowners should apply that principle when comparing treatment proposals. A device that softens water, for example, is not automatically designed to reduce every contaminant named in its sales literature.

Start with the job, not the equipment

Before requesting bids, Erica and other St. Louis homeowners should write down the problem they are trying to solve. Is it scale on fixtures, an objectionable taste or odor, sediment, staining, or a concern identified by a water test? Also note whether the home receives utility water or uses a private well. Those are different starting points.

Ask each company to identify the evidence behind its recommendation. A salesperson should distinguish a measured condition from an observation and from a homeowner preference. If testing is proposed, ask who collects the sample, which laboratory performs the analysis, which substances are included and whether the homeowner receives the complete results.

Compare treatment types by what they actually do

A conventional ion-exchange softener addresses hardness minerals and requires salt or potassium, regeneration water and periodic service. Activated carbon can address certain tastes, odors and chemicals, but performance depends on the particular product, flow rate and replacement schedule. Reverse osmosis sends water through a membrane, usually at one drinking-water tap, and produces a waste stream along with treated water. Ultraviolet equipment is intended for microbial control, requires electricity and may need pretreatment so particles do not interfere with the light. Sediment filters capture particles within a stated size range but do not, by that function alone, remove dissolved substances.

A proposal should name the treatment technology, the target substance or condition, expected capacity and required maintenance. Broad phrases such as “pure water” are not specifications. Ask what the system does not treat, too.

Read certifications narrowly

Request the product’s exact manufacturer and model number, then match it to the certification being claimed. Common references include NSF/ANSI 42 for certain aesthetic effects, NSF/ANSI 53 for specified health-effect reductions, NSF/ANSI 58 for reverse-osmosis systems and NSF/ANSI 44 for residential softeners. A certification applies to listed claims for a particular product. It is not a blanket endorsement of every statement made about the equipment or installer.

Installer credentials also need labels. Ask who issued each license, certification or training credential, whether it is current and whether it belongs to the company or the technician who will enter the home. Then ask who handles permits or plumbing work when those are required.

Turn the warranty into a cost schedule

Separate warranties for the tank, control valve, membrane, electronics, labor and installation. Record exclusions, required maintenance and who pays for travel, diagnostic visits, shipping and removal. Ask what happens if the dealer closes or stops carrying the brand.

For each bid, calculate the first-year price and a five-year planning total that includes cartridges, salt, membrane changes, sanitation, service visits and any monitoring subscription. This is not a prediction of the exact cost. It is a way to make unlike proposals comparable.

For each company, mark yes, no or unclear beside these items:

□ Five-year planning cost calculated
□ Drain, electrical and space requirements explained
□ Cancellation, financing and removal terms provided

Use the same problem brief and scorecard with every bidder. When it is time to invite an on-site proposal, homeowners can request a local water-treatment assessment. The destination must be confirmed before publication because no client domain was supplied.
